Welcome to the Muslim Women's Council of Victoria!

Welcome to the Muslim Women’s Council of Victoria Inc. (MWCV), formerly known as the Islamic Girls & Women’s Group Inc. Established in 1989, we are a dedicated not-for-profit organization with a mission deeply rooted in supporting and empowering Muslim women as they navigate the challenges of living, working, and integrating into the broader Australian community.

Our journey began with the aspiration to address these challenges while preserving the rich tapestry of our members' religious and cultural heritage. We are proudly based in the City of Moreland, serving not only our local community but also extending our reach throughout Melbourne. With over 250 members, our commitment to fostering a strong sense of belonging and unity is unwavering.

Objectives

Our organization is driven by a set of clear objectives aimed at improving the lives of individuals facing continual or temporary challenges. These objectives include:

  • Increase the number of Muslim women who are trained and working in trades, professions and businesses.
  • Encourage Muslim women to assume leadership positions in the Muslim and general community
  • Assist Muslim women in understanding their rights and obligations by assisting women who require support with human rights related issues, such as discrimination and domestic violence
  • Improve the health and wellbeing of Muslim women – preventative as well as remedial health and organising physical and recreational activities for them
  • Establish a positive working relationship with existing Muslim community leaders.
  • Continually strive to increase our membership base including volunteers.
  • Seek and maintain sustainable funding.
  • Improve the understanding of Islam in the general community by holding regular seminars.
  • Give non-Muslims the opportunity to participate in Muslim traditions such as Iftar and Eid events.
  • Shift the negative public perception of Muslim women to align with reality -representing Muslim women’s voices in Australia e.g. via media channels.
  • Improve the harmony between the Australian community by working with a range of government and community groups, e.g. Victoria Police and youth groups of other faiths.
